Key Points That Explain What Happened To The Beatles
A lot of people passionately shake their heads to the beat of their songs, but not everyone knows what happened to The Beatles right before they disbanded.
While the rise to fame was a sight to see, the end might’ve been a little messy, and a lot of fans would agree. That’s why at Jukebox Saturday Night, we’re here to give you a rundown on some of the events that led up to The Beatles’ breakup.
After all, what happened to The Beatles at the end of their group career is still part of who they are and The Beatles’ legacy as a whole.
Point #1: Effects of creative differences
Tensions building at Twickenham Film Studios
In recording the Get Back sessions and the album Let it be, the atmosphere in the studio was thick with dissatisfaction. The Beatles worked on getting back to their regular sessions, especially after John Lennon and Paul McCartney started having differences when it came to musical direction.
Initially, these recordings were envisioned to capture the raw essence of the band, a departure from their elaborately produced studio albums. Yet the studio setup, with its stringent early filming hours, was far from ideal, clashing significantly with the band’s nocturnal creativity cycles. This rigid schedule was a stark contrast to their usual spontaneous late-night recordings, stifling the organic flow of ideas.
McCartney’s plea for unity
Paul McCartney sensed the disintegrating band dynamics and made earnest attempts to rally the group despite the conditions. However, his plea for cooperation and dedication to the project was met with silence from his bandmates, with them seeing his efforts as an overbearing presence.
Point #2: Conflict outside of the group
Yoko Ono’s involvement
Her presence in The Beatles’ recording sessions marked a significant turning point in the group’s internal dynamics. While a lot of people liked the John Lennon Yoko Ono pairing, her constant attendance was generally a disruption that none of the other Beatles members were accustomed to.
Aside from her being there, it showed a shift in John Lennon’s priorities – from The Beatles to his relationship with her. Part of what happened to The Beatles was Lennon’s focus. It was usually centred around Ono, and she drew him away from collective decision-making and contributed to growing rifts.
Point #3: Change in management
The death of Brian Epstein
When their former manager Brian Epstein passed away from a drug overdose, the band was left without the man who had typically managed both their financial affairs and their complex personal dynamics. His death created a leadership vacuum and sparked a contentious debate about his successor.
At the end of the day, Allen Klein was the choice for Starr, Harrison and Lennon. Klein would also notably win over Lennon, praising his unique contributions to their songs and affirming Yoko Ono’s talents as a legitimate artist in her own right. On the other hand, McCartney supported Lee and John Eastman, relatives of his future wife Linda.
Strains from Allen Klein’s style
Allen Klein’s entry as The Beatles’ new business manager introduced a new wave of friction. Known for his aggressive financial tactics, Klein’s approach to handling The Beatles’ affairs was markedly different from the more personal management style they were used to under Brian Epstein.
Klein’s strategies often prioritised financial gains over artistic preferences, particularly alienating Paul McCartney, who claimed that his discomfort stemmed from Klein’s decisions not being in the best interest of the group.
These frictions further deepened the existing fractures within the band, and what happened to The Beatles afterwards was a slow disconnect followed by a formal breakup statement.
