Is The New Bruce Springsteen John Mellencamp Song Unoriginal?
Many fans showed tons of excitement around the web when the Bruce Springsteen John Mellencamp collaboration dropped, and it comes as no surprise. Two huge heartland rock icons coming together decades after their debuts in the 1970s on one album – for many rock aficionados, that was a dream come true.
Both of these crowd favourites have reached heights in their careers that only a few artists have experienced and continue to be relevant even in today’s musical landscape. So, it’s no wonder at all why this collaboration was a hot topic among fans and critics alike.
So, what exactly were the details of this classic rock collaboration? How many Bruce Springsteen John Mellencamp songs were on the album? And which song by the rock music duo stirred a bit of discussion about its similarity to a song by another legendary act?
Jukebox Saturday Night is here with all the answers about this show-stopping album.
John Mellencamp’s 2022 album features Bruce Springsteen
When John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen teamed up for Strictly a one-eyed jack (2022), the response was electric.
Springsteen was featured on ‘Did you say such a thing’, ‘Wasted days’, and ‘A life full of rain’. ‘Did you say such a thing’ touches on themes of truth, betrayal and confrontation; ‘A life full of rain’ deals with themes of sorrow, melancholy, and the burdens that life brings; while ‘Wasted days’ revolves around the passage of time and the feeling of wasted potential.
Strictly a one-eyed jack highlighted the poignant and raw quality of Mellencamp’s songwriting and the electrifying nature of Springsteen’s unmistakable guitar work and vocals. It’s these things that helped them launch their careers with their respective eighties and seventies jukebox staples, and this Bruce Springsteen John Mellencamp collaboration was a wonderful reminder to fans that they both still got it.
But many fans noticed the similarities with the Van Halen hit ‘Finish what ya started’.
There was, however, an initial surprise from fans and critics about the song collaboration ‘Did you say such a thing’. Some listeners noticed resemblances to ‘Finish what ya started’, a song by the rock band Van Halen.
Lyrical similarities
Both songs employ direct language to create an immediate, conversational tone. Mellencamp’s use of direct questioning, such as the repeated query that gives the song its title, underscores the urgency for clarity and truth. This is similar to the language of Van Halen’s song, which uses direct address to convey the speaker’s expectations and frustrations through punchy and to-the-point lines.
Although the messages of the songs are very different. The Bruce Springsteen John Mellencamp song is more of a serious and confrontational story of hurt and betrayal, while ‘Finish what you started’ has a more playful, cheeky edge to its plea and frustration.
Melody and tempo
The two songs do sound pretty similar as well, particularly when it comes to the intro of the tracks. However, there are differences between the Van Halen hit and the Bruce Springsteen John Mellencamp collaboration.
‘Did you say such a thing’ leans towards a reflective, bluesy rock sound with a slower tempo, underscoring its themes of introspection and confrontation. Meanwhile, Van Halen’s ‘Finish what ya started’ is driven by a faster and more upbeat, rhythmic groove.
These differences show that although there are similarities with this rock hit by Eddie Van Halen, who is no longer with us and is now part of R’n’R Heaven, the two songs are actually quite distinct. So, while ‘Did you say such a thing’ is reminiscent of this Van Halen hit, this is actually just another one of the original John Mellencamp hits fans have loved throughout the years.
These artists’ legacies remain
How does this impact the artists’ reputations?
Similarities and controversies can impact an artist’s reputation. When fans and critics notice similarities between songs, it can lead to negative backlash.
However, artists like Mellencamp and Springsteen, who already have rich catalogues of unique songs, receive less harsh criticism. After all, they’ve already proven their musical chops decades ago and continue to do so throughout the years with their distinct style, lyrics, and melodies.
So, while the few similarities do still warrant a discussion, fans who have listened to the Bruce Springsteen discography or are well acquainted with John Mellencamp’s history of hits know that a few similarities here and there in the greater scheme of their huge careers don’t cancel out their originality.
If anything, the discussions surrounding this Bruce Springsteen John Mellencamp collaboration are further proof of these artists’ longevity. It doesn’t matter to fans that they’ve been around since the 1970s. Like other established acts, from Bono to Grace Jones, they continue to be relevant in the industry.
