What’s the scoop on Leif Garrett?
From child star to teen idol
If you’re wondering what happened to Leif Garrett, he first stepped into the limelight in the ‘70s as a child actor. Born Leif Per Nervik, he made appearances on several films and TV shows before he began his musical career when he was 15 years old, when he released his first ever single, ‘Come back when you grow up’.
He consistently released albums from 1977 until 1981. A good number of his singles charted on the Hot 100 and were covers of old hits, like ‘Put your head on my shoulder’ by Paul Anka as well as ‘California girls’ by the Beach Boys.
In 2019, Garrett explained that his vocals in some of his recordings were mixed in with the vocals of another singer, Jim Haas. He said that he felt frustrated because, instead of being trained by a professional, his vocals were processed to the point where it didn’t sound like him.
The challenges of stardom
However, fame came with its share of challenges, as forgotten 70s bands know. Garrett’s journey was marked by personal struggles with substance abuse that often overshadowed his achievements. The ‘80s were tough after he was involved in a car accident in 1979, which significantly impacted his personal life and career.
