1. Formation of the GTOs
Miss Mercy Fontenot wasn’t just hanging around the fringes of rock ‘n’ roll – she was right at the heart of it, shaping one of the era’s most avant-garde groups: the GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously). When Frank Zappa put them together, he had the idea of presenting something genuine rather than something manufactured.
It was 1968, and the band, consisting of Miss Pamela, Miss Mercy, Miss Cynderella, Miss Christine, Miss Lucy, Miss Sandra and Miss Sparky, were storming a stage dominated by men, flaunting a blend of performance art and rock that Los Angeles had never seen.
Miss Mercy, with her bold personality and fearless creativity, was essential to their wild performances – think elaborate costumes and provocative antics that shook up social norms and pushed the boundaries of what a music performance could be.
Despite having somewhat limited vocal skills, the lasting appeal of the group lay in how they were presented. The GTOs made a huge impression on fans of the counterculture movement with their crazed aura, bizarre outfits, freaky stage performances and unconventional song lyrics. What’s more, each member had a distinct, outlandish personality, which, when put together in a group, created something truly fascinating.
2. Becoming a fashion icon
And it wasn’t just the music scene that felt Miss Mercy’s influence – a pivotal part of her persona and impact as a counterculture icon was her audacious fashion style. The mere thought of her brings to mind her signature look, wearing flowing garments spun from vintage fabrics topped with striking racoon-like eye makeup, which still inspires many today.
More than just personal style, her fashion was a rebellion against the mainstream, inspiring a whole generation to embrace individuality and defy conformity. Echoing the sassiness of Mae West, Mercy painted a picture of herself that was captivating and creative, exclusively focused on personal expression rather than appealing to male attention.
3. Release of Permanent damage: The memoirs of an outrageous girl
The details of Miss Mercy’s chaotic life
Permanent damage: The memoirs of an outrageous girl is as unapologetic and striking as Miss Mercy herself. The memoir covers the life of a rock and roll pioneer who threw caution to the wind, casually detailing everything from her biggest milestones to her darkest, most tragic moments. It gave fans shocking insights into her struggles with drug addictions, sexual assault and multiple marriages, embracing the highs and lows of her rollercoaster career.
Impact of the autobiography on readers
Peeling the curtains back on the ‘60s and ‘70s counterculture and the rock and roll scene, this book quickly became a firm favourite among readers and critics alike. It was notable for avoiding sugarcoating and delivering a raw, authentic look at Miss Mercy’s life.
Anyone with a curiosity for music history, or simply the human stories woven into those times, will definitely find this book an interesting read.
