How Old Is James Hetfield And What’s He Doing Now?
Any Metallica fan will have asked themselves from time to time, ‘How old is James Hetfield? What’s the shredder doing these days?’
Metallica is one of the most influential thrash and heavy metal bands to come out of the 20th century, known for rock classics like ‘Enter Sandman’, ‘Nothing Else Matters’, and ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’. The distinct sound of the James Hetfield guitar riff has inspired countless aspiring guitarists around the world.
Younger fans have also been introduced to the band through ‘Master of Puppets’, part of the album of the same name. The song appears in the Netflix show Stranger Things, which is set in the ‘80s, with one of the characters playing the song during a critical moment in the show.
But how old is James Hetfield now, and what has he been up to?
The story so far
James Alan Hetfield was born in Downey, California. James Hetfield’s birthday is on August 3, 1963, and he turned 60 years old in 2023.
He learned piano when he was nine years old and started playing the guitar a few years later. In high school, Hetfield wanted to pursue American football as a possible future career, but his prospective coach wouldn’t accept him into the team unless he cut his hair off, which was at a length typical for rock ‘n roll fans at the time (that is, it was long).
Then, in 1981, James Hetfield met Lars Ulrich after answering an ad in a local newspaper looking for new members for a band. The two joined forces to start Metallica, starting what would become a household name for rock ‘n’ roll fans all over the world and inspiring many rock artists to aim for a James Hetfield career for themselves.
James Hetfield: A rock ‘n roll legend
As an artist, Hetfield has made a huge impact on the world of rock and metal music, defining a new, heavy and aggressive sound not just for Metallica but also for other bands and artists. He has also raised the bar for songwriting within the heavy metal genre through his candid lyrics about personal struggles and redemption.
With nine Grammy Awards and an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, it’s safe to say that the band is essential listening for every rock ‘n roll fanatic. Because of the enduring mythology of the band’s greatness, even new fans find themselves asking, ‘How old is James Hetfield?’ in awe of his and the band’s achievements.
New creative frontiers
Every career has its ebbs and rises, and many fans of the band find themselves searching up ‘How old is James Hetfield?’ out of curiosity about where the Metallica frontman has gone.
At the tail end of the 2010s, Hetfield entered rehab for returning problems in his personal life, which led the band to cancel their tour dates for Australia and New Zealand so that he could properly recover.
With the James Hetfield family and his friends in full support of his recovery, the band ventured into different artistic avenues, such as streaming archived footage of previous performances and working on the foundation for their next full-length album.
The James Hetfield Metallica fans have always loved returned in full force in 2020, making his first public reappearance in Los Angeles at the launch of an automotive vehicle exhibit.
He’s been back with the band ever since and has participated in the most recent Metallica album, 72 Reasons, which was released in 2023. The band also promoted the album with the M72 World Tour, which began in Amsterdam on April 27, 2023. Hetfield also shared that he’s writing more music and still playing the guitar every day.
