3 Reasons Johnny Thunders Was a Punk Rock Icon
If you’ve ever picked up a Johnny Thunders biography or enjoyed any of the New York Dolls or the Heartbreakers’ hits, then you know that Thunders led a rock ‘n’ roll life, from the ups to the downs and everything in between. With what we know about the late guitarist, he probably wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
Here on Jukebox Saturday Night, we remember Johnny Thunders’ role in the punk movement and why he continues to be an influence in the genre to this day.
Reason #1: Musical brilliance
The New York Dolls and The Heartbreakers
Johnny Thunders started his musical journey early, forming his first band, the Reign, at just fifteen. By seventeen, he was already a fixture in NYC’s club scene, and it wasn’t long before future Dolls members Sylvain Sylvain and Billy Murcia recruited him, leading to the formation of a band that would become a cornerstone of punk rock. The Dolls quickly influenced many future punk and new wave acts.
Thunders later formed The Heartbreakers, joining forces with ex-Dolls drummer Jerry Nolan. Their distinctive style resonated more in the UK, and their status as punk royalty was only cemented by their involvement in the Anarchy Tour alongside the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned.
Unique guitar style
Thunders’ guitar playing was a blend of raw energy and distinctive sound, drawing heavily from influences like Chuck Berry and the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards. His style was marked by screeching, penetrating riffs that became his signature.
He also had a knack for adding flair to the simple composition, just like some of the Cowsills members. For example, ‘Personality crisis’ only relies on three simple power chords, yet his raw, energetic strumming brings the song to life.
Signature songs
Outside of the significant impact of Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, his solo career also produced iconic tracks.
One of his most renowned songs, ‘You can’t put your arms around a memory’, showcases the softer side of his raw vocals and highlights his lyrical talent. This song, in particular, is often cited as his signature song because it captures the punk icon’s unique blend of vulnerability and raw power.
Reason #2: A defiant spirit
Johnny Thunders’ signature guitar, the low-slung ‘59 Les Paul Junior Doublecut in TV Yellow and his Keith Richards-inspired leather jacket made him an icon that is still remembered around the web.
Thunders and his New York Dolls bandmates pushed boundaries with their androgynous style – heels, makeup and other drag elements. This look alienated some in the US, especially during the release of their eponymous album, but it resonated deeply with UK fans. Still, Thunders never relied on his looks, famously saying, ‘Rock ‘n’ roll is simply an attitude. You don’t have to play the greatest guitar’.
Reason #3: Lasting legacy
Struggles with addiction and public perception
Johnny Thunders’ battle with heroin addiction was no secret. It affected his health, performance and public image. In 1991, he died at age 38 from drug-related complications. Though he is now in R‘n’r heaven, those who knew him described him as a caring, kind-hearted individual who was always there for his friends, in spite of his personal challenges.
Timeless music
The Heartbreakers’ album ‘L.A.M.F.’, released in 1977, stands out as a timeless classic. It avoided the heavy political statements of its contemporaries during that era, allowing its music to transcend time.
Songs like ‘Chinese rocks’ and ‘All by myself’ carry an unmistakeable authenticity and raw energy, maintaining their appeal across generations by capturing the essence of punk rock without being tethered to a specific era.
Cultural impact and influence on punk rock
Some of the forgotten 70s bands as well as iconic groups like the Smiths and David Bowie drew inspiration from Johnny Thunders’ style and attitude.
Artists across generations have recognised the impact of the New York Dolls, seeing Thunders as a trailblazer who showed that anyone could make it in rock. His rebellious spirit and raw sound continue to inspire new generations of punk musicians, cementing his legacy in rock history.
