3 Reasons Why The Amazing Album of Bob Seger Back in ‘72 Deserves More Love
In the annals of rock history, the 1973 album of Bob Seger Back in ‘72 often gets overlooked. Yet, this obscure gem possesses an unmistakable charm for the acclaimed singer-songwriter’s diehard fans.
And you know what? We agree with them.
Here are three reasons why this Bob Seger album deserves much more recognition than it often gets.
1. Simple yet impactful lyrics
As a performer, Bob Seger has always put great value in expressing relatable, middle-class struggles like love, self-discovery and the career grind. These themes are alive and well in the album of Bob Seger Back in ‘72, which contains many tracks that have resonated with fans over the years.
While Bob Seger Back in ‘72 lyrics may not be extravagant, they’re captivating and connect with an entire generation. The songs have since become timeless classics, and the album is a testament to the power of simplicity and authenticity.
Seger’s hit song ‘Turn the page’ was actually first released on this album, and it became popular precisely because of how well it captured the day-to-day problems of a travelling musician. Meanwhile, the titular track ‘Back in ‘72’ deals with similar themes but with some added criticism for the political climate at the time.
Track highlight: ‘Rosalie’
Among the songs in the album of Bob Seger Back in ‘72, ‘Rosalie’ is one that stands out, especially if you don’t know who the lyrics are referring to. This song is basically an open letter of admiration and gratitude to Rosalie Trombley, a radio music director at CKLW and a key figure in helping Seger become a breakout star.
‘Rosalie’ exhibits Seger’s genre-blending prowess in its fusion of rock and country elements. It brings nothing but positive vibes, driving home how much of a beacon of hope Rosalie was in Seger’s life.
2. Cult status among fans
Back in ‘72, despite having a mild commercial response at best, it blossomed into a significant part of Seger’s discography. Much of its allure lies in the album being dubbed an underrated gem by ardent fans.
As a result, the album of Bob Seger Back in ‘72 has cultivated a dedicated fanbase that celebrates its unique attributes and artistic direction. Some critics have given Back in ‘72 its due praise years after its release as well, like Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic, who praised the excellent lyrics and delivery and gave it a score just shy of a perfect five stars.
3. Rarity and exclusivity
Arguably, part of what made Back in ‘72 so obscure was Seger’s reluctance to reissue most of the albums from this point in his career. To this day, the album has yet to see a reissue on CD. Of course, Bob Seger Back in ‘72 vinyl releases are also out of the question, and it isn’t even available among Seger’s albums found on streaming services. Though fans may clamour for a rerelease, Seger seems adamant about never doing so – a fact that seems unlikely to change.
Such inaccessibility has unwittingly spun a web of intrigue around the Bob Seger Back in ‘72 album, enhancing its exclusive charm and turning it into a prized catch in the eyes of collectors and enthusiasts.
The story behind the recording of Back in ‘72
A financial misunderstanding between Seger and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section played a significant role in the making of the Bob Seger Back in ‘72 album.
Seger said that Muscle Shoals agreed to record the album for a cost of US$1,500 for each side. At the time, Seger misunderstood, thinking they meant each track. This ended up being too costly for Seger, and he left after recording only three songs.
Despite this, Seger remained open to collaborating with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and worked extensively with them on many of his top-selling works.
More than just a forgotten album
Back in ‘72 may not be representative of the hit star that Seger would become in his prime, but we believe it should still be appreciated as a testament to his growth as both a songwriter and a performer.
The album of Bob Seger Back in ‘72 is a window into the singer’s early career and the influences that shaped his sound for years to come. It captures a unique time in Seger’s career and deserves to be remembered.
